My Quick Introduction!

Hello! My name is Emily. I am majoring in Economics. I am originally from Germany and moved to Alaska in middle school. I’ve lived there the past nine years. Three weeks ago I moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where I am staying for the next year which is why I have to take all online courses for now. I work at a Wells Fargo bank here. I am hoping to eventually move back to Germany, specifically Berlin. It has to be one of my favorite places in the world.

Valdez, AK

One of my main hobbies (besides fishing) is pottery. I’ve spent a lot of time throwing bowls, cups, etc. in the ceramics arts room at UAF which I definitely miss most about being on campus. I am currently looking for a new place to start pottery again down here. I also spend a lot of time painting. I like to paint landscapes and repaint photos I’ve taken from hiking trips. I enjoy looking at other peoples artwork whether it’s going to an art museum or looking at a friend/family members art and being able to give constructive criticism. A favorite artist of mine is Gustav Klimt. I especially love the way he used gold leaf to produce such beautiful art. I’ve seen some of his art work in the museums in New York City. I saw some of his original work that my parents had hanging up in our home while I was growing up, which I was extremely excited about.

Well that’s a short introduction of me. Looking forward to seeing everyone’s posts throughout the semester!

  1. Hello Emily! It seems like you have been around a bit. Wells Fargo is also my bank and I love that we were both born in different counties other than the United States. You also seem to have a natural talent in pottery and hope to see some pictures of your creations in the future.

  2. Hello!
Welcome to the class! Wells Fargo is a great bank. It is pretty cool that in the modern day you can take classes through UAF all of the way from North Carolina!

  5. Emily,

I think that it is very awesome that you moved to North Carolina. I grew up in a small town there called Newport. It is a very beautiful place and I love the picture you chose to put up!

  7. Hi Emily I know several people who do pottery as well and I have always found that to be a fascinating skill. Although I have never been able to do it myself I think its pretty amazing. Great first blog and I’m looking forward to taking this class with you.

  13. I also love the ceramics studio, here at UAF. I am just learning to throw, and am currently taking the Ceramics Materials class with Theresa. Bummer for all of us here, that you moved away, but certainly best of luck in your endeavors!

  14. I didn’t see your introduction the first time around but interestingly enough, we’ve both lived in Alaska, you longer than me, though I would have stayed forever if the army would have let us, and we both live in North Carolina. Since you moved here recently, welcome!! This November, we’ll have been here three years and while I’d give anything to move back to Alaska, we loved it so much, we want to return there one day when my husband is out of the army, so I can relate to your desire to go back to Germany, North Carolina does have it’s own charm. I think you’re closer to all the interesting things than I am, being closer to the big cities and I’m in Cameron which is a small town close to the military base Fort Bragg. But I found it interesting that after we chose the same painting, we’ve lived in the same places (with the exception of Germany) and have a bit in common! I think you’re a bit of a different artist than I am, I write and you paint and sculpt but I wish you the best in your new home and I hope you achieve your goal of getting back to Germany one day.
